PROBIOTICS . . . yes or no?

I have been hearing more and more lately about the benefits of probiotics. Are they good for us or just another passing fad? I, as well as several family members have intestinal issues, do we start taking them, if so, what kind, how do you know if they work or if you are just wasting money or worse yet putting more junk into your body? Can you take the tablets or is it better  to take the ones that require refrigeration? There are so many questions I have regarding probiotics. If you have any input you would like to share, please feel free to do so, it would be greatly appreciated.2probiotics

    Probiotics are definitely good for you! Regular intake of probiotics (healthy or friendly bacteria) help keep things running smoothly in your digestive tract. They help to break down food and keep levels of unhealthy bacteria at bay, and can even boost our immune systems.

    However, it isn’t always necessary to take a probiotic supplement to get the daily good bacteria we need to keep our gut full of healthy bacteria. You can eat yogurt or other fermented foods containing this good bacteria (such as kambucha tea which you can buy at health-food stores). I make my own yogurt (about a quart a week) and eat it with fruit, a little agave nectar, and some granola. However, as with any product you purchase, if you are going for healthy, be sure to read the ingredients and avoid foods with too much added sugar or sweeteners. It’s typically better to purchase plain yogurt and add what you like to it.

    Also, any time you take antibiotics it will kill off much of the good bacteria in your system as well as bad bacteria. I will often increase the amount of probiotic foods I am eating any time I am prescribed antibiotics to help keep my digestive tract stable.

    If you do choose to take probiotic supplements, you may want to discuss with your doctor first. Please keep in mind that I am not a doctor and as such my advice only comes from the research I have done on my own. You will likely be recommended to look for a supplement with lactobacillus acidophilus, a strain commonly found in most yogurts.
